Knox County

Sandhill cranes flew over the Karns community today, just west of the
intersection of Henderson Rd and W Emory Rd. After approaching from the
east, they circled around for about 5 minutes as if wanting to set down.
This area has a considerable amount of pasture, but it may a bit more broken
up with trees and fence rows than they prefer. One bird kept straying from
the group and finally another one peeled off to join it. I lost track of
them, but I believe these two may have set down somewhere close to here. I'm
quite sure that I had a good count of twenty birds initially, but only
eighteen flew off together. These headed off in a northwesterly direction -
toward Melton Hill Lake (should have put them very near the Bull Run Steam
Plant in Anderson County only minutes later). The birds were very vocal and
appeared to be no more than 100 feet high when circling.
