May 24, 2005 was the first day of the fist season of he MAPS station
at Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge. 2 banders, 1 bander-in-training,
two band-aides and 2 new trainees were on hand for the event.

The day started off a bit rough with a missing net, some
mis-communications and nets getting set up late, but that was all
very quickly forgotten with an exciting day and
great company. Nice weather most of the day was also nice.

One of our nets was only open 1.3 hours, and several were not quite
right for at least the first hour, but we still managed to get 49
captures of 17 species! And only one bird got away unbanded.

Highlights included a Grasshopper Sparrow. Eye candy was highlighted
by a gorgeous adult male Blue Grosbeak which attempted to remove my
finger while I took its picture.

We also took home 2 cute little kittens that one of the volunteers
promised to find an INDOOR home for. Unfortunately we were not in
time for the litter mate, who we found dead. Feral cats are not only
a major ecological problem, the poor things usually meet an unhappy,
early end.

Birds we encountered, but didn't get in the nets included a singing
Prothonotary Warbler (Jim Giocomo banded 2 in the same spot 2 weeks
ago) and a pair of Eastern Kingbirds, as well as a numerous Northern
Bobwhite.

Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge is a south-pointing peninsula on the
French Broad River and much of it is being managed for native warm
season grasses.
