Is it a sign of an early hard winter??? Two adult snow geese showed up in
Pool 9 grazing on the mudflats. Got a good long look at them in the
spotting scope on both land and water. Managed a digiscope picture with my
cell phone. Checked out the back end of the Duck River mudflats now that
the lake has dropped more. Shockingly few birds of any sort. Mostly wood
ducks with a few killdeer and surprisingly few wading birds around. Began
bushogging fields last week flushing sora on a regular basis. Last week on
Friday flushed dozens out of one field but only one Monday while finishing
that field and only 6 in another field later in the day. Tuesday was spot
spraying alligatorweed and was finding sora to be abundant while traveling
through fields to reach alligatorweed patches. Flushed off the "resident"
sandhill crane in disked field in Pool 6. Supervisor was bushogging today
and found sora to be abundant. He did flush what he thinks was a VA rail
in Pool 6. Said the bill was clearly longer than sora and rufous wings
were obvious in flight.
