Morgan County, AL

As part of the Association of Southeastern Biologists meeting being held in 
Huntsville, I led a field trip to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge yesterday. 
The only participants on the trip were a group from Pikeville College in 
Kentucky, and despite chilly and windy conditions, we saw quite a bit. Here is 
our list:

Pied-billed Grebe = 2
Double-crested Cormorant = 1
Great Blue Heron = 1
Great Egret = 12
Canada Goose = 2
Wood Duck = 1
Blue-winged Teal = 32
Hooded Merganser = 2
Sharp-shinned Hawk = 1 (The group got to see it catch a White-throated Sparrow)

Ruby-throated Hummingbird = 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker = 1
Eastern Kingbird = 1
White-eyed Vireo = 1

Northern Rough-winged Swallow = 5
Tree Swallow = 40+
Carolina Chickadee = 4
Eastern Tufted Titmouse = 4
Carolina Wren = 2
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher = 15
Eastern Bluebird = 14
American Robin = 5
Brown Thrasher = 1
Northern Mockingbird = 1
European Starling = 36
Yellow-rumped Warbler = 3
Prothonotary Warbler = 1
Common Yellowthroat = 1
Northern Cardinal = 16
Eastern Towhee = 2
Song Sparrow = 2
White-throated Sparrow = 7
Red-winged Blackbird = 63
Brown-headed Cowbird = 8
American Goldfinch = 41
