Went down to Hiwassee to see the Whooper today. Thought it was going to
be yet another wild crane chase - there have been an inordinate number
of them this year.
Just before I was about to leave the viewing stand I saw the flash of
white with naked eye out in the field on the other side of the first
water, and quickly confirmed it was the Whooper in the scope, acting
just a bit bossy with the neighboring Sandhills. Bigger than them, but
definitely outnumbered.
Just as another couple were arriving (I had given scope views to a
couple from Bryson City, N.C., already) the Whooper disappeared behind
some trees. We chatted awhile and I learned the new arrivals lived
nearby, but had yet to see a whooper. After a few minutes he came flying
back out and landed in the closest water inlet, giving a marvelous view
- red spot on head, flouncy tail and all.
Also saw two Bald Eagles overhead, one an adult, and an Osprey.
Great Horned Owls are calling outside at Malone Hollow.
My cat just brought in a mouse.
This will probably close out the year at 178 species in Tennessee for
me, a disappointing year given the time spent on fruitless chases. But
as a lifelong Chicago Cub fan it is, "Wait'll next year!"
