The following notes pertain to the early fall arrival of neotropical migrants in north central Costa Rica (Monteverde/Santa Elena?elevation 4500 feet):

This is my first August and September here, and I am surprised at how quickly certain species get down here. I didn?t think that the same species I often saw in east Tennessee in early September could also already have some of their kind already in Costa Rica?not too far from the equator.

Below are my first autumn records for neotropical arrivals. But according to the literature, the following species typically arrive by late August or early September:
Red-eyed Vireo, Black-and-white Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, Canada Warbler, American Redstart, Eastern Wood-pewee, Western Wood-pewee.

So much for the record books. What have I actually seen at this location this year?

BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER: Several seen almost every day since 5 September. Adult males and females/immatures. Flock of a dozen or more seen on 13 September. Adult males not as spectacular as in the spring, but still pretty darn brilliant!

WOOD-PEWEES (Eastern or Western, who knows?): Seen every day since 5 September. Probably about 5 feeding daily on our one hectare of land alone, from various perches.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER: Seen every day since 9 September (males, females, immatures). Should remain relatively common until next spring.

WILSON?S WARBLER: Early sighting on 10 Sept. (fide Robert Dean). First seen by myself on 13 Sept. [These are somewhat early records according to the guide books.] Will be quite common here all winter and spring.

CANADA WARBLER: Adult male first seen today (15 Sept.)
