I had a similar problem recently. Cleaning the connection with deoxit did the
trick for me...

Subject: [torontocbm] Commodore PET 2001 original with External Tape drive
issues
Hello TPUG,
I have an original Commodore PET 2001 with Chiclet keyboard and
I am trying to read a tape from a working tape drive connected to the back
port. The pet provides power to the tape drive since it have rewind and forward
the tape and even play , but the Pet does not acknowledge with I am trying to
load a program off tape and pressing play. The interesting part is that the
tape drive works fine if I use the internal tape drive connection.
Any thoughts as to what the issue may be?
Thanks
Simon
