Yes something new I learned as well since all my other PET machines worked fine 
with the load command without specifying the device number. And the funny part 
is that other PETs have an internal tape drive connector and I did test it out 
and works with device #2 load command.

So again something new I learned for this experience 😊

Thanks Jim, Simon,

Good lesson learned here!  Check for code 18 errors first.  
That makes sense, the default device numbers for the PET's are the ones that 
make the most sense.

Sadly, I know very little about device numbers.  Is there a cheat sheet 
somewhere that lists all the commonly used devices?

I think ,8 is the standard 8050 Disk drive right?  It's just kind of weird to 
think that the same LOAD command works with tapes and disks when the routines 
to read these different mediums must be very different.

Hi Jim,
                Thanks for the suggestion , that did the trick , I can’t 
believe it. I have a regular PET 2001 with non-chiclet keyboard and I do not 
have to specify the device # . But I guess in the case of the original since it 
had the tape drive hooked up to the internal port the back port would be device 
#2.

I believe if you do not specify a device number it implies device #1 if 
you are using the secondary tape interface I believe you must specify 
device #2.
 
I suggest you try it before ripping things apart.

Let me ask a stupid question:
 
    When using the external tape interface are you using the correct
 
    Device/Unit number with your LOAD/SAVE commands?
 


The internal tape interface is device/unit #1 and the external tape

interface is device/unit #2 if I recall correctly.
 


save "filename",2

load "filename",2
 


Device #2 gets recycled in later computers for the RS-232 interface.
