Please consider that the form of fracking that started in the 1940's was
very different from that of today. In 2002 hydro fracking became a high
pressure multi-stage operation using many more times the amount of
water, chemicals and sand that the old style fracking, started in the
1940's, used. It changed from a strictly vertical operation to include the
horizontal component requiring greater pressures and greater inputs of
materials and greater unknowns. It precipitated the Halliburton loophole
exempting itself from the clean water act. Millions of gallons of water and
unknown chemicals used with hundreds of thousands of gallons of polluted
water left underground for future generations to be faced with cleaning
up. I only ask that the oil, gas and coal companies do some solid research
into unlocking this wealth. Gas that has existed for millennia will still
be there, available to extract using methods that could be much easier on
the environment and people than those techniques used nowadays.

You are correct, everything has a cost. There are always trade offs.
Wind farms kill birds, but provide "clean" electricity. Nuclear power
plants kills fish larvae, but heat the water providing waterfowl a place to
swim in the winter. Solar farms fry birds, but also provide "clean"
energy. Then, as you mention, there is fracking. A process that has
existed since the 1940s, allowing generations of birding enthusiasts to
travel the globe in search of the next "life" bird on their list.
Everything has a cost.
