I birded Amelia WMA this morning. Of interest were singing BLACKPOLL WARBLERS
- per Birds of Virginia's South-Central Piedmont (ed. Dalmas et al), there are
no records for this species in Amelia County. This past week they have also
been singing consistently in my yard in southern Powhatan County, located less
than a mile from Amelia WMA as the warbler flies.
Also of interest was a pair of SPOTTED SANDPIPERS. This is the third time this
week that I have seen pairs of Spotted Sandpipers at three different locations
(Amelia WMA, Powhatan Lakes and a private lake in Powhatan County). My husband
has also seen a pair at a second nearby private lake in Powhatan County. My
suspicion is that they may be breeding, unfortunately I am not going to be
around the first two weeks in June to follow up. Spotted Sandpipers have very
interesting breeding behavior - see
