Hi Virginia birders:
A trio of Marylanders -- Helen Patton, Joy Bowen and I -- traveled to
Clarke County today to look for the previously reported female
Black-throated Gray Warbler. We had surprisingly little trouble finding it
(surprising considering the sub-freezing temperatures and strong NW winds),
which we did at 1 p.m., low in a white pine right by the Peetwood
Pavilion. Despite being quite close for a while, it proved a difficult
subject for digital photography and I really don't have a decent image to
show for the effort expended. But a very nice bird, anyway. Thanks to
those who posted on this subject previously. Blandy also had Chickadees,
White-throated Sparrows, Cardinals, a Golden-crowned Kinglet, an Eastern
Phoebe, Blue Jays and 5 Eastern Bluebirds.
Earlier in the day, we spent two hours at the Julie Metz Wetlands in Prince
William County. We failed to find either of the putative two Harriss'
Sparrows, but enjoyed birding this very pleasant area anyway. American
Tree Sparrow was the top bird there.
En route home, we stopped at Sky Meadows State Park, Fauquier County, and
had 3 Red-headed Woodpeckers, 2 Yellow-breasted Sapsuckers, and a
beautiful, hovering American Kestrel. At the Harrison Rd. pond just off
I-66 near The Plains there were half a dozen Ring-necked Ducks in addition
to a male Bufflehead (and a great number of geese, all apparently Canada).
