Peggy Lyons, Mark Johnson, JoAnne Pierce, and I did some birding in the
Stonewall/Concord area (northern Campbell and western Appomattox Counties)
today. Highlights were: eight warbler species (COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, CAPE MAY,
MAGNOLIA, BAY-BREASTED, CHESTNUT-SIDED, PALM, PINE, & BLACK-THROATED GREEN) in
several different small feeding flocks; a few BROAD-WINGED HAWKS passed over;
at least 5 AMERICAN KESTRELS were seen on wires; a pair of rather late
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS (Gold Book late date is 20 Sep, but the late date from
the Birds of Lynchburg, Virginia and Vicinity (the local annotated checklist)
is 1 Oct) flitted around us; GRAY CATBIRDS were heard or seen at every stop;
and 3 AMERICAN PIPITS flew from a field; and a total of 49 species. What a
gorgeous fall day to be out birding!
