I birded this weekend in Norfolk , Virginia Beach and Portsmouth area's mainly
coastal areas.
While viewing the bay from E. Ocean view ave.& 23rd st. in Norfolk I had 2 Cave
Swallows fly by me heading west along the beach. In the bay at this location I
also saw Common Loon , Surf Scoter , American coot and Small flock of
Bufflehead.
At Lynnhaven Inlet and Pleasure House Point park highlights were 3 Nelson's
salt marsh sparrow , 2 of the birds were Nelsoni the other sparrow much greyer
drab bird may be an Alterus still working some photos I took. The marsh areas
in this location should be checked for this species with a little hard work
birders can get this secretive bird to pop up. Other birds of note were Osprey
, Clapper Rail and Snowy Egret.
I did a sea watch from 85st in Virginia Beach small groups of Black and Surf
scoter were going by . Northern Gannets are back I saw about 300 birds working
out over the Ocean.
Other birds from this location were 2 Horned grebe , 1 Common Loon , 1 fly by
Sandwich Tern and 1 Royal Tern
In the Portsmouth area today I had 3 Sora's calling and some nice shorebirds
included 3 White rumps , Western ,Least , and 4 Pectoral
A reminder to all Birders I always find that the first few weeks in November
are good for Vagrants so keep your eyes in the sky.
Cheers
Andrew
