We spent some time at the Cape Henry Inn beach with friends after picking up
our teens from Camp Pendleton/Oceana NAS yesterday. At dusk we went to
campsite 25 to sort dufflebags, uniforms and ceremonial sabers so our teen
could camp a few more days, and when I opened the car door to get out there
were roughly half a dozen Chucks singing all around. Lots of people noise
and a barking Rottweiler, but no doubt about the birds. The family there is
sure they also heard Whips the night before, but I will have to get that
year bird elsewhere. It is a military site with strict access, but local
birders will know more about that than I would. Not sure of the distance to
First Landing birding access as the crow flies, but it probably isn't far.
Still learning my way around in that area. Nothing unexpected at the beach
or in the vegetation near the inn, though the Bottlenose Dolphins were a
nice treat. Wasn't a birding trip, so the Chucks were even more special
than usual.
