as apparently fallen: I have been watching and photographing eagle nests on
Conn Island for 30 years .
This is not the first such mishap. The tree that just fell was at least the
third one with a Bald Eagle nest that had been in that general location.
Before that there had been a long-standing Bald Eagle nest in a large Sycamore
tree about halfway up the eastern side of Conn island. It was right on the
edge of the island by the water and was used by the Eagles for many years.
As long is this yearâs fledglings are OK, Iâm sure that the adults will
find another suitable tree to build a nest. Whether it will be as easy to see
as the one that fell is another matter, but the Eagles tend to like to build
their nest right along the side of the water.
We shall see.

For those of you who, over the years, have followed the Bald Eagle happenings
on Conn Island from either the VA or MD side of Great Falls, I'm sorry to
report that not only is the nest down, but the entire tree is gone. The best
guess, based on informal exchanges of information with several other birders,
is that the incident happened over the past weekend, perhaps on Saturday.
There's good news, though, in that one, if not two, adult Bald Eagles have
been spotted in the vicinity in recent days and the two fledglings were
observed just this morning, safely in a nearby tree, squabbling over what
appeared to be a rather hefty breakfast. The adjacent Great Blue
Heron/Double-breasted Cormorant rookery appears to be quite intact and at
capacity.
