Hey all,
Please pardon the interruption, but since I know many birders out there
have interests beyond birds, and since birders are an army of people willing
to participate in surveys, I figured I'd pass this along. Sorry about the
late notice, as it slipped my mind until my phone dinged me with a reminder
that the survey is tonight.
One thing is that if you know nothing about identification of Crickets and
Katydids this second, it won't take long to get the basics down, and that's
all you need.
The following is from Sam Droege, bug and bird guy extraordinaire,
regarding a cricket and katydid survey tonight. The focus is on metropolitan
areas, specifically Washington D.C., Maryland counties of Prince George's,
Anne
Arundel, Howard, Harford, Carroll, Baltimore, and Baltimore City, and in
Virginia, the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudoun,
but they are accepting and encouraging counts from anywhere.
Here's Sam's email with more details, and telling you how to get involved,
and a link to more information:

PLEASE HELP OUT WITH LOCAL SURVEY OF CRICKETS AND KATYDIDS USING YOUR CELL
PHONE
All:
One thing is for sure, the plant and animal distributions of today will
not be the plant and animal distributions of a decade from now. Some groups,
like butterflies, birds, Odonates have their affinity groups who track and
monitor and compile information, while others, like crickets and katydids
lack the same. We (Maryland Natural History Society and Audubon Naturalist
Society) have developed an easy survey technique for the calling crickets
and katydids that anyone with good hearing and the willingness to learn the 8
common species can participate in.
Do you have a cell phone? Then you can participate and if you don't have a
cell phone you could send this message on to local groups and friends who
you think would be interested. Of value would be to send this to scout
troops and other young people outdoor groups as it is something that they can
participate in two and connects them to nature.
Many thanks
