Lynda and I went down to Cumberland this morning. We got there a little
after 8 and birds were everywhere. On the main road in, we follow a
trail of Flickers as they moved from one tree to the next eluding me and
my camera. There were at least a dozen of them along with a bunch of
smaller birds. We rode along the edge of the woods and there was all
kinds of activity. I got several nice shots of a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT
and a GREY CATBIRD, both new birds for my picture albums. We saw
several Thrashers and heard all kinds of other birds. We got down to
where the dam area is and looked around there. We started hearing all
kinds of screeching birds coming from up the shoreline. We headed back
down toward the dock and didn't see a single bird through there.
Something had spooked everything into hiding. Once we got down to the
dock, we identified the squawking birds as crows and they were most
unhappy about something. Two red-tailed hawks then flew by and headed
to the same area and began squealing as well. We tried to get closer to
where they were and see what the fuss was about without success.
There were about 5 white egrets and one great blue heron in the water
until some boats spooked them off. We also saw a bald eagle, kingfisher
and several groups of vultures.
