Five of us, Renee Hudgins, Todd Day, a couple from Chesapeake, and
I, headed south on Jericho Ditch at 7:00am with the temperature at 68F
and no wind. Rain kept us in our cars for a few minutes, but then
stopped and didn't start again the rest of the morning. The birds were
slow but steady with some nice viewings of Yellow-billed Cuckoos,
Worm-eating, Prairie, Prothonotary, and Black-and-white Warblers. A
pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers put in an appearance. But the bird of
the morning was an adult MISSISSIPPI KITE that Dave spotted and we all
got on as it flew low over us and away, leaving us stunned for several
minutes. There were no Swainson's Warblers recorded on Jericho, but one
was singing along Jericho Ditch Lane as we left the swamp.
The butterflies put on quite a show including the following:
Palamedes Swallowtail 55, E Tiger Swallowtail 4, Carolina Satyr 8, Zebra
Swallowtail 14, American Lady 10, Red-spotted Purple 1, Spring Azure 1,
Red Admiral 12, Pearl Crescent 10, Orange Sulfur 1, Southern Pearly Eye
2, Question Mark 8, Cabbage White 1. Amphibs included Green Frog,
Carpenter Frog, and Grey Tree-frog. The complete bird list from this
morning's walk is below.
The next swamp walk will be next Monday, May 7, 2012 leaving the
parking lot at the refuge headquarters at 7:00am for a walk down
Railroad Ditch. No reservation is necessary, just show up. Hope to see
you there.
