Fellow Birders,
I had a very sad experience today. I am on the road in rural areas most days on
my job and today a song sparrow flew into and under my vehicle. I wasn't
traveling very fast and I stopped and turned around, sure that the little guy
had only been stunned. There didn't seem to be a mark on him when I picked him
up and held him for a time. At first I thought he seemed as if he had a little
life left in him, but after a few moments he became completely limped and died
in my hands. Holding him at that moment gave me an overwhelming sense of the
beauty, and the frailty of our little feathered friends. I was and am very
saddened by this. I would have taken him to a rehabber immediately, but the
closest one is nearly two hours away and I knew there wasn't time. This has
never happened to me before and I hope and pray that it never will again. I
only know that the song of one sparrow will be missed.
