Hello all
Sorry for the late report but I just got back monday evening kind of late . I
lead a group from the Augusta Bird Club down to do a little intense birding .
Nine members & friends of the club enjoyed a fun filled weekend where we netted
131 species of birds from the travels .I will only put in the high lights from
the trip . Some had to leave on Sunday but the remaining were rewarded
yesterday morning in the ditch that over looks the Pony pasture was the Great
Egret with the black bill . As we were leaving & out in the causway we saw at
least 12 Black - necked Stilts ( during our stay ) with one close to the road
sitting on a nest .
On friday we stopped off at Henricus Park where we got out target birds Least
Bittern -- 2 , Yellow - throated Warbler & Prothontary . After that we went up
to Island one where we had about 12 + Purple Sandpiper , Ruddy Turnstone about
30+ were the more notable birds . Once on the Eastern Shore we found 3 E
Collared Doves at the usual spot . At Kiptopeke we refound the Common Eider &
after that we headed on up to Chincoteague . That evening we went for the
Chucks & rails but only heard Clappers .
Saturday morning we started the birding by walking on the beach at Tom's Cove
where we went to find the Piping Plover which was easy all you have to do is
look for the cage placements over the nesting Plovers . Also another target
bird was the Least Tern in which we found at least 15+ . Next we went over to
Saxis for the Seaside Sparrow & Marsh Wren . Once the wildlife loop opened up
we found many Shorebirds . We scanned for any out of the place birds but we did
not find any . There were hundreds of Semi palmated Plovers & Sandpipers ,
Short - billed Dowitchers , Dunlin , Least Sands , & a few Yellowlegs . Also we
had all Herons except for Yellow - crowned Night Heron . Glossy Ibis many fly
overs .
On Sunday the group traveled up to Delware where we stopped off at Slaugthwe
Beack for the Horeshoe Crabs & Red Knots . There were thousands of Shorebirds
but only a very few Red Knots . Then we went on up to Bombay Hook where the
best birds were about 10 American Avocets , 2 Black -necked Stilts, many Blue
Grosbeaks , 30+ Glossy Ibis , Willow Flycatcher , & a couple of Chats .
