I have to agree with Paul. The hummers at our feeders for the past few days
are not "ours" I have a feeder next to the window by the kitchen sink. All
the hummers have favored this style feeder, so it's a busy one. I always
stand at the sink and watch them. They even hang around me while I'm filling
it. Our presence outside near any of the feeders has never bothered them at
all. Now the 2 hummers that have been coming to the feeder, flee as soon as
they see us at the kitchen window. These are not our hummers.. I'm positive
they are just passers by. Also young birds. Glad they found us so they can
tank up! One was out there a few mins ago and took off as soon as it spied
me, so I'm avoiding the window if I can..

Subject: [Va-bird] About those Tardy Hummers
To throw in one more perspective re those hummers seen around the state:
We have kept records of first and final appearances of Ruby Throats for at least 10 years and
had a solitary straggler appear at the feeder on Friday.
Our guess-and is it that-is that the stragglers dropping in for a fill-up every day or so are
not the resident/breeding summer population here in eastern Spotsylvania County but are late
migrators from north of here. They also appear to be young birds.
The latest previous appearance at our feeder was Sept. 16.
For whatever it's worth...
Further enlightenment invited.
