This was a day or 'twos'. As mentioned before, at the low water bridge
I watched both a pair of yellow warblers and a pair of scarlet tanager
males, make battle. Back at home during lunch, I thought I saw two
indigo buntings, first I had seen this year, fly from our feeding
station area to the underside of our deck. Not trusting my eyes, I
took a closer look and yep, there they were, in similar competition.
Up at the shop, the blue-grey gnatcatchers have been constant. But
when they first showed up at least two weeks ago, the song and chirp
were fairly quiet and subdued. Today one was as loud as any noise in
the neighborhood, upping his volume as the day wore on. All around him
was another, and much quieter. The loudmouth appears to have the
territory nailed down. At 8:30 AM I had two ovenbirds shouting at each
other on either side of the driveway...possibly 300 yards apart. One
would yell, then the other. It took nearly two hours for them to have
their duel, which took place in the deeper woods on the north side of
our ridge. Sometimes they sang at one time, other songs overlapped. I
could tell they were very close to one another, so to speak. Today's
new kids were the chestnut-sided warbler, indigo buntings, and the
great-crested flycatcher, which always shows up with a bang.
