I was recently told about a Great Egret rookery in the Campostella Heights
section of Norfolk. I believe the gentleman's name was Jim Harris or Harrison
-- right now, I am having trouble remembering his name. I apologize for that,
but wanted to give him credit for telling me about the location.
Yesterday afternoon, near 5:30pm, I went and checked out the rookery. There
must be at least 15 nests in various stages of completion. The plumage of the
egrets was very striking and observing their activities was quite enjoyable
(even with the wind and cold). They aren't as noisy as I expected them to be.
From Campostella Road, turn left onto Indian River Road. The rookery will soon
be to your left in a small stand of pines, just past a church (Campostella
Heights Seventh Day Adventist Church, I think).
