Our group of six birders tallied 41 species. There was activity on the eagle's
nest with either egg turning or feeding young while the second adult was in a
nearby tree. Two large skeins of migrating geese were very high and headed
northward. We came across two cooperative pairs of pileated woodpeckers
either on the ground or at eye level. Other highlights included a phoebe,
cormorants and a tree swallow. All in all it was a nice mix of birds.
All are welcome to join this Sunday walk that meets at 8:00am in the visitor's
center courtyard. Occasionally we are delayed by a flock in the parking
lot. -- Marshall Rawson, McLean VA
