Birders,
It sure was a frigid wind that buffeted the weekly bird walk yesterday
morning at Mason Neck State Park. But we persevered and were rewarded with
highlights including 64 TUNDRA SWANS--who have been gathering here in
increasing numbers as they get ready to head north--along with a BARRED OWL
sitting in the trees along High Point Road, and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS (yep,
just one-- that any of us could spot, anyway) in the marsh along the Bay
View Trail. We also saw BALD EAGLES galore, soaring on the aforementioned
wind. At least somebody was enjoying it! :-) A NORTHERN HARRIER soared on
the wind as well, seen above the edge of the marsh. A full species list
follows.
The bird walk takes place weekly at Mason Neck State Park. We meet at the
Visitor Center at 9am and hike the Bay View Trail, finishing around 11am.
No reservations are necessary and all are welcome. Come join us! Questions
