21 birders came out this morning for a Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at
Riverbend Park in Fairfax County. The walk was led by David Ledwith and me.
We had an excellent morning with 60 species tallied and several nice surprises.
We started out on the visitor center side of the park and scoped the river.
We found plenty of action with a nice waterfowl showing along with FOS Ospreys
and Bonaparte's Gulls. We also had a three grebe day including at least eight
Red-necked Grebes in various plumage stages with some close to full breeding..
One of the Horned Grebes we found was also very colorful as it showed off its
plumage. As we walked along the trail down the river, we were surprised to
find a Louisiana Waterthrush singing in the woods. After some effort, we
spotted the bird and watched him as he continued to vocalize. We then drove
over to the nature center side to bird the meadow. Here we found singing Fox
Sparrows, a Wilson's Snipe, Chipping Sparrows, and Eastern Phoebes.
