I spotted a large bird on a microwave tower while stopped at the Quaker Lane –
Duke St intersection this morning. Following the Monday morning Huntley Meadows
bird walk I went back to investigate and yes, Virginia, it was a mature Bald
Eagle on top of the tower with what appears to be the beginning of a nest on
the upper platform. It doesn’t appear that you can approach the nest – probably
a good thing – and likely the best view is from the parking lot of the James
Luckett Memorial Park (baseball field). The park/field is on Wheeler Ave, just
off Duke St (McDonalds on the corner). There is a large fire department and
school bus complex between the park and the tower which seems to be close to
the railroad tracks.
