Hi VA-Birders,
We had a great walk back to the swamp bridge this morning, starting at 7:00 AM.
We'd never been there that early and decided to check out what's there.
As usual, the journey to a destination is often the most fun. We had great
looks at a cooperative VEERY that sat on a dead log for several minutes and a
little further down the path saw a SWAINSON'S THRUSH.
We were amazed to see 41 WOOD DUCK, mostly in a single group out in the open on
the reservoir. Usually we get excited when we find just ONE.
The bridge area had nice birds, too - all of these were easily seen in trees
near the bridge:
- A pair of Orchard Oriole
- Male Prairie Warbler
- Red-headed Woodpecker
- Immature male Summer Tanager
- 2 male Common Yellowthroat
On the way back we spotted a BALTIMORE ORIOLE and then 4 GREAT-CRESTED
FLYCATCHER in a cluster.
At the parking area behind the Ranger Station we saw a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER
and heard a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO.
