I birded Occoquan NWR this morning, and there were a few nice birds around.
The biggest surprise was a winter wren along the river. This is the earliest I
have ever seen one in northern Virginia. Other notables were juvenile
white-crowned sparrow, swamp sparrow, about 25 phoebes (really pushing
through), northern waterthrush, Cape May warbler, blackpoll warbler, Swainson's
thrush, blue grosbeak, about 30 pied-billed grebes on the river, and solitary
sandpiper on the pond next to the parking lot.
