The temperature and the humidity were high this morning on the Lynchburg Bird
Club's field trip to Percival's Island Natural Area (Site MPO01 on the Peaks of
Otter Loop of the Mountain section of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail).
This may have contributed to the low number of migrants seen: Great Egret,
Blue-headed Vireo, Chestnut-sided Warbler, and Magnolia Warbler. Other
highlights, among the 37 species recorded, were: a lone female Wood Duck on the
James River, two other wading species (Great Blue & Green HERONS), an Eastern
Screech Owl heard by some who arrived early, single COMMON nighthawkS & CHIMNEY
swiftS were seen flying down the river, several immature Scarlet Tanagers, and
numerous immature Indigo Buntings. Interestingly, in a roost with about 50
other BLACK VULTURES, we saw one with orange tags from the Dutch Gap Black
Vulture monitoring project. The complete species list from Virginia eBird
follows.
