Seven birders joined me for a walk along the Hike-Bike Path and adjacent
meadows and Pond Trail from the Telegraph Road side of Huntley Meadows.
Highlight birds included 2 Prairie Warblers and a Yellow-breasted Chat in
the Main (Woodcock) Meadow, a Pine Warbler in the Virginia Pines near the
Maintenance Building, and a Black-and-White Warbler along the Pond Trail.
Other notable birds were 7 Lesser Yellowlegs and a Spotted Sandpiper in the
Central Wetland, 7 Acadian Flycatchers, 4 Great Crested Flycatchers with
close up views of a possible breeding pair in the Main Meadow, 3 white-eyed
Vireos, 8 Red-eyed Vireos (my first at Huntley this year), 2 Wood Thrushes,
2 singing American Redstarts, 9 Ovenbirds with 5 along the Pond Trail, a
likely Scarlet Tanager breeding pair along the Pond Trail, 2 Chipping
Sparrows singing, 5 Indigo Buntings, and a Baltimore Oriole in the Main
Meadow. Tree Swallows and Common Yellowthroats were everywhere; numbers
were 22 and 21 respectively.
The group also were treated to 4 healthy 11-day old bluebird nestlings in
one of our nest boxes.
