Headed out this morning to check out some territory I was unable to cover
Sunday because of rain.
Traveling West on SR 24 turn left on Spring Mill Rd, turn right on Toll
Gate Road and travel the whole road. Great sparrow habitat on this road.
At the intersection of Toll Gate and Plum Branch Rd. turn left. There is a
small pond at that intersection which can only be seen by looking over the
gate and for the first time this year there were ducks there. A female
canvasback and 11 ringnecks.
Travel down Plum Branch Rd to the next intersection and turn left on Booth
Road. This is the road where I most often find pipits and horned larks
and once a bald eagle sitting in a tree by a pond. Today there were a pair
of hoodies in the tiny pond on the right. Travel this road to it's
intersection with SR24 and turn left to head back to Concord.
In addition to the above mentioned ducks I saw:
Juncos
song sparrows
blue birds
tree swallows
grackles
chickadees
titmouse
white throats
white crowned sparrows
cardinals
chipping sparrows
meadowlarks
downy woodpecker
red bellied woodpecker
piliated woodpecker
kestrel
sharpie
2 of the most beautiful pine warblers in the bright morning sun
yellow rumps
The number or robins was uncountable. Every yard, field and pasture was
full of them and it has been this way for at least a week or more.
And last but not least, a group of rusty blackbirds in the yard of 135
Toll Gate Rd.
I have found them at this location in years past and they were finally
there this morning. This is only about a ten mile loop from my house. A
great start to the week!
