Susanna,

The chimney swifts were out last night about 7:15. There are two chimneys
on that road and the swifts were using the one closest to Glebe Road. I
think they may switch between both chimneys. Apologies if I did not reply
to the list correctly.

On the subject of chimney swifts, has anyone been to the roosting site in
Arlington, VA at S. 16th and S. Edgewood Streets this year? I stopped by at
dusk this past Sunday night and could see NO swifts at all in the area. It
seemed too early for them to have all settled into the chimney.  Wondering
if they're still using that chimney.

Thanks,
Susanna

HI all,

With all of the rain in general and then all of the rain from Florence, I
have not had a chance to check on the Chimney Swifts this month at
Riverheads High School until this evening.  I was not sure what to expect
with the weather of recent and a little bit of a later date to check.

The Swifts first appeared at 7:07 and the numbers steadily grew and they
started to drop into the chimney at 7:38 and finished up at about 7:50.  I
guesstimated there were 1,870.  Not my highest count for this location but
it was still a great show by the Swifts circling and chattering and a good
number.

I got to Snickers Gap about 9:30 this morning and found one other birder
there. He and I counted a conservative 106 Broad Wing Hawks before we left
about 11. There were also a couple of raptors that we did not identify.
Also at least 15-20 monarchs.

No big migrant fallout at Conway-Robinson State Forest in Prince William
County this morning, but I did manage 9 warbler species (Am. redstart,
black-and-white, common yellowthroat, northern parula, pine, magnolia,
black-throated green, black-throated blue, and hooded).  The only decent
flock I encountered consisted almost entirely of pine warblers, which was
in the pine forest (makes sense).  This section of the forest also
contained good numbers of red-breasted nuthatches (7) and red-headed
woodpeckers.  Other notables were a sharp-shinned hawk carrying a
still-struggling downy woodpecker, 7 house wrens, 2 rose-breasted
grosbeaks, 3 thrush species (wood, veery, and Swainson's), an adult male
harrier, and 2 common ravens.

Light to moderate winds were generally from the east, with mostly to partly
cloudy skies and temperatures in the high seventies. The weather was quite
pleasant; maybe fall is finally on the way!

Raptor Observations:
There was a fantastic kestrel flight and great raptor diversity today! We
also enjoyed watching several large kettles of ~40-60 broad-wings.
Accipiters are finally starting to reach us, and we had some great looks at
harriers.

Non-raptor Observations:
Songbirds were quieter than expected, but a few warblers were around,
including a good number of Pine Warblers. Highlights included:

1 Black-throated Blue Warbler
1 Eurasian Collared-Dove

VA-birders,?
I was a one-man band on the summit of Buffalo Mountain in Floyd County.
What makes this site so wonderful was definitely manifest today - really
good looks at Broad-winged Hawks which come by most places so high they can
only be discerned as "specks". On Buffalo today, virtually none of my birds
were merely specks. There were probably a lot of birds that I couldn't
count because I was focused on the main alley directly in line with the
summit of the mountain. Many of the passing birds did not kettle, but
rather just glided over the summit. I also had some Ospreys, Sharp-shinned,
Coopers, and Red-shouldered Hawks, oddly no falcons. I did have a bizarre
experience involving a Sharp-shinned Hawk that whizzed by within literally
a foot of my face....a real attention-getter.?
Hoping for a productive next couple of days on the Buffalo!

Whippoorwills sounded off at 7:36, at very last light. Yes, I was

scanning the sky, not many hawks escaped our count during the 3 hours they
were with us!!

Weather:
Another nice day. Clear in the am with valley fog, then a few clouds
forming as the heat built up. Temperature ranged from 68 F in the morning
to the low 80s by mid-afternoon. Visibility was good. Wind was mostly from
the S/SW and fairly steady all day with speed varying from a slight breeze
(4-7 mph) to a moderate breeze (13-18 mph).

Raptor Observations:
The first Broad-winged hawks begin arriving at 8:55 and we experienced a
steady flow all day. Morning birds were mostly seen with the naked eye, but
as the heat built up they were flying high and at the limit of unaided
vision, with some not picked up without binoculars. During the afternoon
they were on both sides of the mountain. Flying conditions began to
deteriorate during the 4:00 o'clock hour. Hourly counts: 8:00: 10; 9:00:
185; 10:00: 236; 11:00: 240; 12:00: 110; 1:00: 100; 2:00: 290; 3:00: 270;
and 4:00: 10. We had the usual array of Turkey and Black vultures; a couple
of local Red-tailed hawks drifted by.

Non-raptor Observations:

Monarch Butterflies: 14
Double-crested Cormorant: 1
Several Chimney swifts, a few warblers, and 3 Ravens

Predictions:
Warm and clear weather is predicted. Should be another good day for seeing
hawks!

Hello birders,

My apologies.  VA-Bird is continuing to prevent me from sending emails
from my cell phone.  I sent this message (below) Wednesday morning, but
only now realized that it never came through.

I really wish we could fix this ongoing issues with the listserve.  If
anyone wanted a shot at going to see those Vireos, their chance has been
delayed essentially 2 full days because of this computer / software issue.

More tech details: you may notice below that I intentionally sent this to
both "listserve.com" and also "listserv.com".  Rich previously suggested
that might be the source of my difficulties here.  But in response, I
received an email saying that "listserv.com" had no such domain
"va-bird"; and also the usual frustrating response from VA-Bird, saying
"The message's content type was not explicitly allowed".  I have checked
carefully, and there does not appear to be any "content type" in my sent
messages, for the list serve to reject.

I have also checked that my phone is sending these emails from my
registered email account with VA-Bird.  You can see that yourself in the
message below that VA-Bird sent back to me.

Again, my apologies for getting this word out so late.  I have no access
to my laptop when I'm out in the field; and VA-Bird is continuing to
prevent me from emailing from my phone.

Hello Birders,
The NY Monuments location (Prince William) was up to its typical high
standard for fall migration this morning.

Nice variety including 9 warbler species, but by far the highlight for me
was two (2) Philadelphia Vireos and a Yellow-throated which sang. Also my
FOS Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Good birding,
Steve Johnson
