I saw a pair of Osprey building a nest on a sign over interstate 64. Right
before the 264 interchange. Not a very good place for a nest. This is westbound

Early this morning:
Heard 2 male turkeys gobbling a lot--FOS.
Heard my first Louisiana Waterthrush singing quite a while along a small
stream.
Had my first Field Sparrow in my yard (had already heard a few singing on my
exercise route).
And yet, still have a Red-breasted Nuthatch in my yard!? One landed in my
Photinia this morning.? As of yesterday (not sure yet today), I also still
had Purple Finches.

A single Osprey was perched on the nesting platform near the boat launch this
morning (Tues). Waiting for his/her mate (or perhaps Godot)? Nest
construction has not begun. Approx 12-15 Fish Crows we?re having a gabfest in
a tree near the office trailer. An adult Bald Eagle was perched near the nest
at Dyke Marsh; was unable to spot the owls nesting cavity.

Just a few notes on sightings at Occoquan Bay-
There are several king rails in the refuge's wetlands. Where Easy Roadcrosses Catamount Creek, one of these rails has been pretty cooperative in
coming out of hiding for easy viewing.
Lots of fox sparrows along the backside of Bayview Road-counted at leastseven visually; two or three more were pretty vocal but not observable. Very
typical for this time of the year.
Ospreys are everywhere, especially along the shoreline where MarumscoCreek enters Occoquan Bay.
Tree swallows have arrived, along with a few cow birds and two catbirds(catbirds may have overwintered)
Blue -winged teal in the company of a pair of widgeons was seen on thepond by the parking lot-first time I've observed either species at this
location on the refuge.
Cardinals are everywhere. I counted 27 individual birds today, about halfof which were on seen on Fox Road. At one point, I observed six males and
two females perched on the same small Bradford pear tree. A remarkable
sight, and reminder that what may be considered common can still be
amazingly beautiful.
Waterfowl continue to be this season's big disappointment; nevertheless,large rafts of scaups remain on Occoquan Bay.
Can't wait to see what shows up next!
