Dave,
Dave you will want to take Laurel Fork road from Bluegrass in Highland county I
believe this is labeled 642 but that is unclear from the Mapquest map I just
looked at. At any Laurel Fork Road is the road heading west between Bluegrass
and New Hampden. Take Laurel Fork Road and head West for about 2-4 miles over
one perhaps two mountains you will eventually come to a open area which was
created by Beaver dams. There is an abandoned house in the bottom of the open
area/field/ meadow.... (with a large boat stuck inside (long story)) The Alder
Flycatcher can be heard singing near the house and or upstream closer to the
road where the culvert is. Also seen here are Harris' Checkerspots and Common
Ringlets if you are into butterflies. Black-billed Cuckoos, Yellow, Redstarts,
Mag, Chestnut sided, and Worm Eating Warblers can be found as well. Look for
Vesper Sparrows, Dickcissels, Bobolinks at the beginning of Laurel Fork road
where there are open fields and farmland etc.
This is a rather remote area and there are no gas stations and very few
houses... so be sure to have plenty of gas etc.
If you keep going on Laurel Fork Road to even more remote areas you will
eventually come (5-8 miles) to Allegheny Road a right turn. This road can be
good for Swainson's Thrush, Mourning Warblers in a large clearing on left after
just a a short distance after turn off. Locust Springs is nearby as well and
this spot hosted Crossbills a few weeks ago per post by John Spahr.
If you have Claudia Wild's book she has excellent description of this area...
If you have other questions dont' hesitate to write. Very beautiful area you
will love birding there!!!
best,
William Leigh
