I almost added belted kingfisher and killdeer to the new yard list until I
saw the local mocker do them.

Subject: [Va-bird] Mockingbird and call imitation

I heard something interesting on my walk around the neighborhood this
morning - the Mockingbird was giving the Summer Tanager "pick-a-tuck" call.
I haven't heard any Summer Tanagers myself yet, and it's the first time I've
heard the Mockingbird do that this year.  Which makes me wonder - has he
heard the Summer Tanager call recently, or does he remember it from last
year and realize it's due?  I'm inclined towards the first hypothesis, as
he's out there all the time and I'm not.  If nothing else, it's a useful
reminder about the tanager's arrival.
