I wrote this back on Feb 25, 2001 to VA Bird. Does anyone know if a population
ever established itself in James City Co?
"A PAIR OF BLACK-HOODED PARAKEETS were going in and out of a natural cavity in
a sycamore tree at the intersection of routes 603 and 60 just east of Lanexa in
James City Co (at A.3 / 6.4 page 50 in Delorme). The male was particularly
beautiful with his striking scarlet leggings and cobalt-blue wing patches!
Their screeching calls drew my attention as I came to a stop at the
intersection. They seemed nervous about me and my camera even as I stayed
inside the car to try to get a picture so please stay in your vehicle and keep
your distance. I did click a few pix just for documentation but they will be
poor pictures. Route 60 is a busy road and parking there is not safe.
Apparently, this species has established itself in some other parts of the
country. It would be interesting to see if this pair breeds here in this
sycamore tree. They were eating flowers of nearby red-maple tree. They also
went to a sweet gum, but I don't know if they were able to get any seeds from
the gum balls. They also visited some nearby bamboo."
BTW I have no idea idea what happened to those photos.
All the best

Interesting cases of escaped birds today. While working in southeastern
Halifax County today (Tuesday) Steve Roble and I found a Budgerigar sitting
in the middle of a rural road. I approached the bird and it moved towards
me briefly but then took flight and ended up somewhere in the adjacent farm
field.
Sent me for a double take like never before.

Gennette, That's exactly what it is! He's staying in place, vocalizing,

Sounds like a possible Green-cheeked Parakeet (Conure). Does it have a
black/grey beak?

Hi all, We have a parrot or parakeet (Yellow-billed Cukoo size, restless
and noisy) in one of our pine trees. It is green with what looks like a
light tan underside, a reddish long tail, an huge tan or white spectacles.
Not sure if it is an escapee or what. Dave Gibson, Chesapeake
