I agree wholeheartedly.

Finding your inbox cluttered with VA-bird messages? First, remember
that you signed up for a service that emails you posts from birders
across an entire state. Second, consider managing your VA-bird
messages through filters and folders (for fine control over what shows
up in your inbox), perhaps under a different email account, instead of
expecting others to change their posting habits to suit you. This
applies equally to those who receive the digests--if you choose to
read VA-bird in this form, you should beware the disadvantages.

Having said that, I think Kurt's point is to get the rare bird reports
(and eBird in general) out to non-eBirders. I am not personally
subscribed to the rare bird alerts on eBird, but now I don't have to
be, and had I been already I would either unsubscribe to them or just
deal with having two copies of the same thing (it's not a big deal to
me).
