I see hawks/raptors on road-killed deer and other animals on a fairly
regular basis. Ease of acquisition figures into dining choices for lots of
birds! Best ever was the adult bald eagle along Seaside/600 on the Eastern
Shore. It was on a deer carcass near the road and the vultures clearly
considered it to be the boss. Worst was a buteo on a very busy on-ramp to
I-95 at 64. It was almost hit by a truck as it waited till the last second
on a carcass where 2 lanes merged to one.

Subject: [Va-bird] Red-shouldered Hawk eating deer meat
On Dec. 15, someone dumped a deer carcass just down the road from my
driveway. Yesterday morning as I returned home in my car, a Red-shouldered
Hawk was feeding on it with 5 crows. As the hawk flew away across the road
right in front of me, I got a wonderful look at a beautiful adult bird.
I had been disgusted when I had first seen that carcass by the road, but
getting such a good look at the hawk was nice and seeing it feeding on a
dead animal was interesting.
Sincerely,
Marlene
