I, too, birded Sky Meadows on 5/17. I understand that the NVBC birded the
Visitor Center and Walnut Grove areas.
Some may be interested in my sightings as compared to the NVBC's, as I birded a
different route. On the drive into the park I birded briefly at the Contact
Station and then I walked from the Visitor Center area to the AT by way of the
North Ridge Trail. Top bird for me was a RUFFED GROUSE which was heard
drumming once off of the North Ridge Trail above the intersection with the
South Ridge Trail. I got good looks at 2 of the 4 CERULEAN WARBLERS that were
singing in that same stretch of trail. Like the NVBC I did not find any
Carolina Wrens.

A total of 8 people participated in this morning's
Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at Sky Meadows State Park
in Fauquier County. The Park's Red-headed Woodpeckers
were cooperative as usual, giving everyone great views.
Numerous meadowlarks, bluebirds, and Indigo Buntings added
color. The American Kestrels are occupying the nest box
near the Park office & a pair of Common Ravens put in
an appearance. Migrants, however, were hard to come by --
Common Yellowthroat & Yellow-rumps were our only
warblers. Oddly, we did not hear or see a single Carolina
Wren. (Due to wet conditions and time constraints, we did
not go over to the east side of the park, where the shrikes
are sometimes seen.)
