Dave, I posted to Shenvalbirds which is the local bird listserv , I was very
rushed and didn't think to check the other listserv prior to posting.
I thought the bird I saw was mostly in breeding plumage, neck was red/rufous
and cap on top was black. I had the bird in view for about 5 minutes but at
some point it dove and I never saw it again so it's easy to loose a bird on a
lake that big. So if your bird was in basic plumage I would think it's very
possible that there were two RNGRs.
all the best,

William,
I just saw your photo in eBird. We might have each had a
different bird on the lake. I photographed mine as well. Your bird
looks close to full breeding plumage. Mine seemed more
transitional. Could have been lighting, I guess (and my bird was
pretty distant), but I'd bet that there were two grebes on the lake
this morning.
