This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, July 26, at
9:00 AM.
Top birds this week are BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK* in VA,
WHITE-FACED IBIS* in MD, CALIFORNIA GULL in DE, and MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD*
in VA.
Other birds of interest include ducks, NORTHERN BOBWHITE, LEAST
BITTERN, LITTLE BLUE HERON, WHITE IBIS, PEREGRINE FALCON, shorebirds,
terns, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, sparrows, and DICKCISSEL.
The BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK* was seen again on July 19 and 23; as
before it was on the Wildlife Loop at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co,
VA.
The WHITE-FACED IBIS* reported last week at the North section of the E
A Vaughn Wildlife Management Area, Worcester Co, MD was see again on
July 20.
A third-year CALIFORNIA GULL was found July 24 at Prime Hook NWR,
Sussex Co, DE.
A MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD* was found both July 23 and July 24 in the
Glenmore development, a private gated community, near Charlottesville,
VA.
The hen NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen again at the Swan Creek dredge
containment facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on July 20.
Three NORTHERN BOBWHITES were seen July 25 at Old Bradley Rd, Mardela
Springs, Wicomico Co, MD.
LEAST BITTERNS continue to be seen at the Dutch Gap Conservation Area,
Chesterfield Co, VA with a report from July 22. A LEAST BITTERN was
seen on the Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA walk July 24.
LITTLE BLUE HERONS popped up in a number of locations.
WHITE IBIS continued to be reported this past week in both MD and VA
in areas where they were not previously common.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was the highlight of the weekly walk at Huntley
Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on July 25.
Shorebird reports increased throughout the area this past week. On
July 20 two AMERICAN AVOCETS were reported in DC flying upstream on
the Anacostia River from the Pennsylvania Ave Bridge. An AMERICAN
AVOCET was seen July 22 at Myrtle Point, St Mary's Co, MD. An UPLAND
SANDPIPER was seen July 22 at the Salisbury Airport, Wicomico Co, MD.
Thirty-seven WESTERN SANDPIPERS were seen July 20 with the other
shorebirds at the Swan Creek dredge containment facility, Anne Arundel
Co, MD. Three STILT SANDPIPERS were found July 23 at Truitt's Landing,
Worcester Co, MD. There were two STILT SANDPIPERS among the many
shorebirds at Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD on July 25. Two
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen from Alexandria, VA, on July 21 on
the mudflats at the Hunting Creek Bridge.
A GULL-BILLED TERN was seen at Chincoteague on July 21 and one was
also seen on July 23 at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel islands,
Northampton Co, VA. One was also seen July 23 at Bombay Hook NWR, DE.
LEAST TERNS were seen in both MD and DC this past week. On July 19 two
were seen and photographed at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Prince
George's Co, MD; three were seen there on July 22. On July 20 two were
seen in DC on the Anacostia River upstream from the Pennsylvania Ave
Bridge; three were seen July 23 in the same general location from
Anacostia Park. BLACK TERNS were seen on July 23 at the Assateague
Island National Seashore and the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD.
Three BLACK TERNS were seen at Hart-Miller on July 25.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was calling July 24 in a back yard in Maryland
City, Anne Arundel Co, MD
The SWAMP SPARROW at Dyke Marsh was seen again on July 24. Early
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS popped up in a couple of locations this past
week. One was seen July 20 in the Lost Lake area of Patapsco Valley
SP, Baltimore, MD.
DICKCISSELS continued to be reported throughout the area this past
week though in smaller numbers.
Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey,
VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
