VA-Birders,
Pat Blyer and I took a walk at the Long Branch Nature Area, Arlington
Co., including Glencarlyn Park and the W&OD Trail area in the park this
morning.
From the viewing platform at "Sparrow Swamp," we saw a Green Heron at close
range--the first one we have seen there this year. Then, walking a little
farther south, down the W&OD Trail, we saw a greenish bird chase a Cardinal
across
the trail. The chaser turned out to be a Kentucky Warbler! Then we saw
another bird, which was almost certainly an adult male Am. Redstart, fly across
Four Mile Run and into the same trees on the bank where the Kentucky had been.
We never saw this bird again, but while looking for it, I found a Canada
Warbler there. None of these birds breed in the park, or anywhere in the
county as
far as we know, so they had to be fall migrants.
