I spent some time yesterday afternoon in the "Quarantine Road" section of
campus, basically a small garden of scattered small shrubs with a handful of
mature trees. Considering the location, I was very surprised when an Ovenbird
popped out of the shrubbery and foraged along the ground in the wide open,
within 5 feet of the bench where I sat. This morning I revisited this area,
and found the Ovenbird to still be present, along with a cooperative Veery who
was extremely vocal. I was hoping for some migrants, but I would never have
expected either of these species in such an urban environment.
The nearby Larchmont Park (directly across Hampton Blvd. from the campus) held
some birds as well, including Yellow and Blackpoll Warbler, Blue-Headed Vireo,
Great-Crested Flycatcher, Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron, and Boat-tailed Grackle.
Not a bad break from studying for exams!
