Inspired by Nick Newberry's sightings at Difficult Run I went birding at Flint
Hill School's upper school campus and a neighboring portion of Oak Marr Park
from about 5:15 to 6:30 this evening. I couldn't find a Lincoln's Sparrow but
winter wrens (9) were all over the place. Other highlights were a gorgeous
adult white-crowned sparrow, which I think is the first I have seen at this
campus, an indigo bunting, two palm warblers (yellow), a blue-headed vireo, my
first juncos, white-throats and hermit thrushes of the season here, and lots of
chipping (60) and song (55) sparrows. Huge numbers of grackles and starlings
are still roosting in the small patch of bamboo along Oakton Rd, though the
numbers tonight seemed only about half as many as the 21,000 that were here on
a drizzly evening last week.

Chipping Sparrow 60 in short grass on south slope of dry-pond between
woods and berm.
Field Sparrow 5 west edge thickets with song sparrows
Song Sparrow 55 scattered all around campus in thickets, especially the
west edge
White-throated Sparrow 5 surprisingly few,west edge thickets
White-crowned Sparrow 1 this was a nice surprise, a gorgeous adult
behind the facilities storage shed near tennis courts
Dark-eyed Junco 2 with chipping sparrows
Northern Cardinal 2
Indigo Bunting 1 in brush pile and eating grass seeds
