lol John i think i've actually given up on microsoft word on the iPad. i get
the proofing but it does nothing, i'm sure its possible but me and word will
not be friends hahah

Again, apologies for the long URL.
As far as I could gather, you should open Word on your iPad, navigate
your way to:
Settings > General > Keyboard
and make sure Check Spelling and Autocorrection are both on. The
latter will become a nuissance if you switch to another language,
allegedly.
