hi,

i closed every thing down, i think!
the only thing it's saying is the time and date, "2 17 43-july 1st" it keeps repeating that but it counts up what seems to be the seconds ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cearbhall O'Meadhra" <omeadhrac@xxxxxxx>

Susan,

You can check that everything is closed from the first page in the task
list. It says "applications" at the top of the page and is usually just
before the "processes" page. If the applications list is empty, then you
have all your applications closed. Things like Skype and cookies and
programs which are in difficulty do not show up as applications but are in
the list of processes.

I have only 19 processes on my PC so your 57 suggest that you might have a
lot of adware or cookies. Have you run a scan for viruses, malware, cookies
recently?

I would suggest you follow Paul's advice on running Malwarebytes in full
scan mode (it takes about four hours to complete but is well worth it). Then
I would run cClean and finally do a defrag (another long job!). these long
jobs can be done at night or when you know you can leave the computer for
the time needed.

It would be interesting to see if the number of processes falls after these
basic tasks have been completed.

I think Excel might be struggling to keep control of memory and that might
be why you are having this trouble.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Susan,

57 processes sounds quite high! Are you sure that you are looking at a
page in task manager that says "Processes List" at the top of the
page?

If so, can you close all programs and then tell me how many processes
are in the list? It is important to have all programs closed so that
we are not seeing processes that are part of those programs.

You will only see Excel in the processes list while it is running. You
will not see it there unless you have excel open.

Are you still having trouble with the broken file?

All the best,

Susan,

I think you are seeing a temporary file that Excel has created due to
a malfunction while Excel was running. Even though you pressed
alt-F4, Excel cannot close sometimes when something has gone wrong
internally.
As long as excel is still running, you will not be able to delete
this temporary file.

The simple way to delete it is to restart the computer and then go to
the folder and delete the temporary file (it is the one with all the
unreadable stuff in the file name!)

Another way which you might like to try before restarting the
computer, is to open the task list by pressing control-shift-escape.
This opens up the task list showing the applications which are
running. This list will be empty if you closed Excel and have no
other programs running. That's fine if so. Press control-tab once.
This should now announce "Processes page". If not, repeat Control-tab
and keep going until you hear "Processes Page". In this list you will
see all sorts of strange file names. These are all the processes in
your computer. Ignore the strange names. Just press "e" for Excel. If
Excel is still running in the background it will show up here.
If
you hear "Excel.exe" then you know that it is still trying to run,
even though you closed it down. Just press tab about three or four
times until you hear "End process" and press enter. Press excape to
remove the task list.

To make sure all is cleaned up, go to the recycle bin and empty it.

I would then restart the computer just to make sure all is well.

All the best,

Cearbhall

hi folks,

can any one help, strange thing has been happening lately with me as
regards files i have saved in x l, when working in these files and
i'm finished what i'm doing i press alt f4 you know the usual to come
out of the file when i see that as well as the file i've just come
out of it has put another file in that same folder right below the
one i've just come out of, for instance say i've just come out of a
file called "susan 2014" below that there has appeared another file
called "susan 2014. xls~ rf 1d4f" there is some thing at the end of
that but can't make out what jaws is saying. however when i go to
delete it there is a big bong and jaws says "error deleting file or
folder dialog can not delete susan 2014 xls~ rf 1d4f access is denied
make sure the disk is not full or right- protected and that the file
is not currantly in use ok button"
this folder i'm working with is on my pen drive as it is very private
so i don't obviously keep this information on my hard drive.

best wishes

susan
