I also tend to use the normal earphone socket, since I haven't really had good
luck with USB devices. USB seems to carry quite a bit of noise, and also most
act like their own sound card, so I don't use it. I bought a USB turntable, but
quickly dispensed with the USB connection and went the traditional plug-in
route, since the USB just was too noisy.
