I haven't used a USB audio device much, but I wonder if the recorder plays to the line in and you have Audacity set to microphone. Go to the Device toolbar, or press Shift+i, and set the Recording Device to line in.

USB seems to carry quite a bit of noise, and also most act like their own sound card, so I don't use it. I bought a USB turntable, but quickly dispensed with the USB connection and went the traditional plug-in route, since the USB just was too noisy. Matthew
