I haven't used a USB audio device much, but I wonder if the recorder plays to the line in and you have Audacity set to microphone. Go to the Device toolbar, or press Shift+i, and set the Recording Device to line in.

I just used a standard 3.5mm audio jack, and think didn't need to do anything like turn on listening to line-in in sound card settings, but, can't remember right now, but, main thing was making sure the recording device in audacity was set to line-in, and not just microphone.
Stay well

thanks for your replies, i'll try that.
do you need a jack extention or a double adaptor for the
headphones to plug in to the cassette recorder and pc?

    Thanks again :)

When I've recorded tapes and LP's using audacity, I just used the
stereo line-in on muy laptop, instead of mono microphone socket..?

        player

I also tend to use the normal earphone socket, since I haven't
really had good luck with USB devices. USB seems to carry
quite a bit of noise, and also most act like their own sound
card, so I don't use it. I bought a USB turntable, but quickly
dispensed with the USB connection and went the traditional
plug-in route, since the USB just was too noisy.
