No mixer. Just a headset with mmic, plugged into the audio port.
My projects mean I read notes or lines from a script, via voiceover, and
record my voice. It wouldn't do to have the computer voice mixed in.
I wanted to use audacity, since I can record in a better quality than the
built in voicememo app. And the soundcard on my Windows machine is a flaming
piece of. well. its not good.
Currently, as a workaround, I've been converting my notes to a readable
format to send to my phone, and reading through an earbud. Not preferred by
me, since the touch screen makes it easy to fly off to unknown parts of the
notes, and I can't fully turn it off during the recording session. .
I do have an XLR studio mic on a single channel mixer. Technically just a
power supply for the mic that changes to USB to connect to the computer. I
wanted to use the headset, since it maintains a consistent distance, and
avoids inadvertently bumping into the mic or stand, or drifting too far.
If it would help to use a mixer, what kind would you recommend. Low budget.
At most two XLR inputs, I only have two XLR mics at the moment. And possibly
mixing in or attaching an external device. Either a digital recorder, or
adding in an outside audio source such as a phone or other noise making
device to mix in.

It is no option for such a thing because a microphone needs a soundcard in
use in order to function properly.
If your question is about recording just your microphone but not the speech
from your screen reader, then yes, this could be possible but it is
necessary to know more about your setup.
Do you use a USB mixer? You have activated stereo mix? Do you use an usb
micophone or a built-in one?
When you talk about your projects actually what do you do with this?

After not using my Macbook for some time, I found I had removed Audacity. So
I loaded the current version.
Works fine. One question I have is that it records what Voiceover is saying
in addition to my mic.
Is there a way to have Audacity only use the mic and not the sound card?
At some point it could be helpful to record the voice, but not for my
current projects.
